'Denis Levaillant’s score deserves much praise. It uses the classical orchestra enriched with a few instruments such as the accordion, typical of the era, and the tenor saxophone, and others, even rarer, like the oboe d’amore and contrabassoon, intended to contribute their color to certain characters. Quite colorful and rhythmically rich (jazz is the most noticeable influence), it is hugely active support for the dance throughout the evening. Conducted by Koen Kessels, the Orchestra of the Paris Opera plays this beautiful but difficult score with fantastic spirit, making it a key element in a production indeed worthy of the house that brought it into the world.’
